Florida Targets ‘Super Speeders’ with Tough New Penalties

Florida’s Crackdown on Speeding Began July 1

Speeding is a dangerous driving behavior that is the cause of many car accidents, leaving people with serious injuries. But no matter how fast drivers were going, they rarely faced criminal charges. In Florida, that’s about to change.

A new state law went into effect on July 1, 2025, targeting what lawmakers call “super speeders.” Under House Bill 351, drivers who exceed the speed limit by 50 mph or more – or operate a vehicle over 100 mph in a reckless manner – now face criminal charges, stiff fines, possible jail time, and mandatory court appearances.

What is Florida's new speeding law?

The new law creates the offense of "dangerous excessive speeding," which is now classified as a separate crime. A first conviction can lead to up to 30 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both. Repeat offenders face up to 90 days in jail, $1,000 in fines, and if the offense occurs within five years of a previous conviction, a mandatory license revocation of at least six months.

In addition, anyone caught driving more than 50 mph over the posted speed limit must appear in court—paying a fine alone is no longer an option. Law enforcement officers also have more discretion to impose enhanced penalties for drivers going 30 mph or more over the limit.

The law seeks to crack down on high-speed reckless driving, which has led to a rise in serious and fatal crashes on Florida roads.

What makes speeding so dangerous?

When a driver exceeds the speed limit, especially by extreme margins like 50 mph or more, they put everyone on the road at serious risk. That’s why Florida’s new “super speeder” law is such a significant step toward improving public safety.

One of the biggest dangers of speeding is the reduced reaction time it causes. The faster a vehicle is traveling, the less time the driver has to respond to unexpected hazards, such as a stopped car, a pedestrian, or changing traffic signals. Even a few extra seconds of braking distance can mean the difference between a near-miss and a fatal crash.

Speed also magnifies the force of impact in a collision. A crash at 100 mph is far more destructive than one at 60 mph, often resulting in catastrophic injuries or fatalities, not just for the speeding driver, but for anyone else involved. Seatbelts and airbags are less effective at such extreme speeds, and vehicles are more likely to roll over or become uncontrollable.

High-speed drivers are also more likely to engage in other risky behaviors, like weaving through traffic or tailgating. These actions make it harder for other drivers to predict what they’ll do next, increasing the chances of a crash.

Speeding can leave crash victims seriously hurt

High-speed collisions frequently cause catastrophic injuries. These include traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), spinal cord damage, multiple fractures, internal bleeding, and severe burns. The human body isn’t built to withstand the violent forces involved in a crash at 80, 90, or 100 mph. Even with safety features such as airbags and seatbelts, the risk of permanent disability or death remains significantly higher.

In addition to the immediate trauma, victims often face long-term medical treatment. That might mean surgery, physical therapy, mobility aids, and ongoing pain management. Many are unable to work while they recover – or may never return to their previous jobs. The result is lost income and financial instability.
