When people ask, “why do I want to be a lawyer?” I typically reply with the conventional
answer that “I’ve wanted to be a lawyer since I was six years old.” Although that has
always been true, my passion for the law is more importantly fueled by distinct events
including the passing of my father and resulting litigation.

My father (J.S.) passed away when I was six years old. This was one year after I arrived
in the United States from South America. My father’s passing was sudden and
unexpected, and the result of medical negligence. Shortly after my father’s passing, my
mother struggled as a single mother of four children, knew little of English and had no
comprehension of the laws in the United States. Some years after his passing, my
mother won her medical malpractice case due to the negligence of health care
providers causing his untimely death.

During those long and strenuous years there was one person who gave my family the
hope necessary to get proper justice for my father. That person was my family’s
medical malpractice lawyer, Casey Shomo. Even as young as I was as a child and ill-
informed about the specifics of the case, I always knew that Mr. Shomo would be there
to accompany my family and be my family’s defender, seemingly taking on the role of
my father right after his passing. After the case closed Mr. Shomo never left my mind,
turning into a role model for the rest of my young adulthood. In my eyes, Mr. Shomo
was a real super hero making me aspire to be a successful lawyer who can help my
clients win cases and fight for their rights and justice.
